I have to admit that I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with sock knitting! At the moment I am in a ‘love’ phase and so flipping through this book is a real treat. With 14 unique patterns, it introduces more than 20 different techniques, making it a great resource whether you're new to sock knitting or looking to expand your skills.

A Sock for Every Knitter

The book features a fantastic mix of designs, covering everything from traditional top-down socks to innovative toe-up constructions. There are also patterns with unusual textures, lace, and colorwork, as well as a fascinating spiraling sock design that immediately caught my eye!

The variety extends to different cuff, heel, and toe styles, so you’re not just knitting socks—you’re learning how small construction details can change the look and fit. Whether you love a classic ribbed cuff or want to experiment with something more decorative, there’s plenty to explore here.

Clear Instructions and Helpful Visuals

Each pattern is well-written with clear, step-by-step guidance. The book is only 48 pages long, but the layout makes the most of the space. The photographs are crisp and well-styled, giving a great visual reference for each finished sock.

I particularly appreciate the balance between written instructions and charts. Some sock patterns rely too heavily on one or the other, but here you get a nice mix—helpful whether you’re a chart reader or prefer to follow along with row-by-row instructions.

My Favourite Pattern

Oh, this is a tough one! But if I had to pick, it would be the Ribbed Anklets. I love shortie socks and this one is really calling out to me. The rib pattern will help the sock stay in place and not move around in a shoe. This can be a bit of an issue sometimes with short socks. It’s also a great project if you love playing with self-striping or hand-dyed yarns.

Things to Consider

  • The book is quite compact, so while the variety of techniques is excellent, you might find yourself wanting even more patterns to try. Having said that it is a great book to carry along with you as it has a soft cover and can easily be added to your project bag.

  • The yarn choices used in the book are beautiful, but some may not be widely available, so be prepared to hunt for good substitutes. Isn’t it great that there are so many gorgeous sock yarns out there?

  • The patterns use inches when giving sizes so if you prefer to use metric sizes you will need to convert them.

Final Thoughts

Love to Knit Socks is a fantastic addition to any sock knitter’s collection. It offers a great mix of patterns, techniques, and styles while keeping the instructions clear and engaging. Whether you’re knitting your first pair or looking for fresh inspiration, there’s something in here for you.

Now, excuse me while I dig into my sock yarn stash—these patterns are calling my name!
