A new Granny Square Card deck.... this time from Leonie Morgan
If you love granny squares, you’ve probably noticed that card decks are becoming more and more popular — and for good reason. They’re practical, portable, and (crucially!) they don’t snap shut just as you’re mid-round.
But this particular deck does something a little different.
The Bright & Bold Granny Square Card Deck isn’t just about giving you patterns to follow. It’s about encouraging you to play — especially when it comes to colour.
What's Inside?
Inside the box, you’ll find 50 individual granny square designs, each presented on its own card. On the front, there’s a clear photograph of the finished square, and on the back, a crochet chart to guide you through the construction.
There’s also a 32-page booklet included, which is far more useful than you might expect. It covers everything from reading charts and choosing colours, through to joining methods and finishing touches — all the bits that can make or break a project.
One of the standout features (and something I always appreciate from a technical point of view) is that the squares are designed to come out at a consistent size. That means you can genuinely mix and match them without ending up with a blanket that has a mind of its own.
🎨 Colour Takes Centre Stage
The designs aren’t just about structure or stitch patterns — they are very deliberately about colour. Bold colour. Confident colour. Sometimes slightly unexpected colour.
And I think that’s what makes it so interesting.
Rather than feeling like:
“Here’s a pattern — now choose your colours…”
…it feels much more like:
“Here’s what happens when you experiment with colour.”
If you’ve ever found yourself reaching for the same safe combinations (I know I have), or staring at your yarn stash wondering what on earth goes together, this deck gently nudges you out of that comfort zone.

🧶 More Than a Pattern Collection
What I particularly enjoy about card decks is how interactive the whole experience feels.
Because each square is on its own card, you can lay them out, shuffle them around, and start to visualise how different designs and colour combinations might work together. It becomes less about following instructions, and more about making creative decisions.
In that sense, it feels less like a pattern book and more like a design tool — something you can return to again and again, each time with a slightly different outcome.
😄 A Small Warning…
This is one of those resources that encourages a very familiar thought:
“I’ll just make one square…”
And before you know it, there’s yarn spread across the sofa, three colour combinations under consideration, and a project that has grown far beyond its original intention.
Not that that’s ever happened to me… 😄

My Favourite...
I am just blown away by this delightful asymmetrical Mitred Flower. 😮
Just think what you could achieve with several of these squares - lovely!

🧠 Final Thoughts
From a technical perspective, the instructions are clear, the charts are easy to follow, and the structure is well thought out.
But what really sets this deck apart is the way it helps you develop something a little less tangible — your confidence with colour.
And that’s a skill that carries through into every project you make.
If you already enjoy granny squares, this will give you a fresh perspective. And if you’ve been playing it safe with colour, it might just be the gentle push you didn’t know you needed.
