Live via Zoom or Self-Study?

There isn't a right or wrong choice here, both options teach the same.

The assignments and modules are identical, so the question you need to ask yourself is whether you are self-motivated. This is key for the self-study course.

The next decision is time. If you have time now but the live via Zoom isn't starting yet, it might be better to start with the self-study (you can upgrade to the live via Zoom sessions later if you feel you need that extra support and accountability).

The last decision is budget, the live via Zoom gives full support for the initial 5 weeks and then continued support for your tech editing journey in a more comprehensive way than the self-study option.

Oh yes… more than ever.

Before I stopped taking on new clients, my inbox was bursting every single day. Designers, publishers, magazines, yarn companies — all desperately looking for someone they could trust to make their patterns clear, accurate and publish-ready.

I was working flat out, and still couldn’t keep up.

The demand for tech editors has exploded since Covid. So many talented new designers stepped forward during that time — brave, creative people who finally started sharing their ideas with the world. And we’re so lucky they did. Some of the most exciting designers we’ve seen in decades came from that era.

But every new designer creates more need.

More patterns.

More work than one person could ever take on.

I am Carol and I help those who love knitting or crochet to be able to change their lives and the lives of others by enabling them to make a living helping others publish wow patterns and be seen.

I have now trained over 100 tech editors since I started this journey in 2020 and I won't stop until I have to.

Several of these have now gone on to become designers as well as tech editors, meaning that they now need their own tech editors - you cannot tech edit your own patterns !

When we started these courses in 2020, the stats on Yarnpond.com said that the ratio of designers to tech editors was 7 to 1, and as of Autumn 2025 the ratio is 6.5 to 1 - which means that for EVERY tech editor there are 6.5 designers needing their patterns tech edited, and when you consider each designer usually produces more than one pattern that is a huge demand for tech editors.

And that’s when I realised something important.

How Is The Course Delivered?

The self-study is all pre-recorded; once you have completed checkout, you will have immediate access.

If I Cannot Attend A Live Session, Will I Miss Out?

Absolutely not! All live sessions (for one course or both) are recorded and available via replay shortly after the session ends.

You are still encouraged to join the private Facebook group so you can connect with Carol, Paula, and the other students throughout the 5 weeks.

How Long Is Each Session?

The self-study pre-recorded modules are broken into 'daily' chunks. These are around one hour long in total, but they have been chunked down further to make it convenient for you.

Will I Be Able To Ask Carol Questions?

Yes — absolutely.

Live students are encouraged to ask questions throughout the sessions, and the Working Together sessions give you real-time opportunities to check your assignments with Carol as you complete them.

I Haven't Set Up A Business Yet Is This For Me?

Totally!

There is a full module to help you get started, whether you’re taking one course or both.

Will I Be A Tech Editor After This Workshop?

You will receive your certificate from Carol at Cool Wool School, which you can use when speaking to potential clients. Many in the yarn world are aware of Carol's teaching methods and her high standards of technical editing.

So yes, you will be a tech editor when you finish the course, you just need to pass all your assignments, which will be individually marked!

How Long Is Each Session?

Each live session is approximately one hour long.

If you’re taking both courses simultaneously, the timetable has been carefully designed so sessions do not clash.

Replays can be accessed through the course portal if you are unable to attend live.

Will I Be Able To Ask Carol Questions?

The self-study option offers the opportunity to book three 10-minute sessions with Carol, allowing you to jump in, ask your question, and get unstuck, so you can move forward.

If you need more time, you can book additional paid sessions.

I Haven't Set Up A Business Yet Is This For Me?

Totally! This course has a module to help you get started!

Will I Be A Tech Editor After This Workshop?

Yes!

You will receive your certificate(s) from Carol at Cool Wool School once all your assignments are completed and passed.

Take one live course → become certified in that discipline.

Take both live courses → become certified in Knitting and Crochet Tech Editing in the same 5-week window.

The self-study videos and resources are available for one year after purchase.

The 'Assignments' section doesn't have an expiry date, so you can continue to submit your assignments even after your 12 months have expired.

You will have the opportunity to extend your access beyond 12 months if you need longer to complete the course; or some who complete within the 12 months wish to keep access as a digital library reference guide, and so extend access.
