The Concept
In this book Lucy gives us a beautifully presented collection of contemporary crochet projects designed to elevate your living space with texture, calm, and creativity. This book is a celebration of clean lines, neutral tones, and functional makes—perfect for modern makers who love a stylish finish.
The Aesthetic
The first thing that stands out about this book is the aesthetic. It’s a refreshing shift from brightly coloured novelty crochet—favouring instead a palette of neutrals, warm pastels, and earthy tones that suit a range of home styles. If you love the look of Scandinavian interiors or natural textures, this book will feel right at home on your coffee table (and in your project basket).
Lucy’s photography is light, airy, and calming, helping you visualise how each project could fit into your own home. It’s as much lifestyle inspiration as it is instruction.
The Projects
With 12 patterns ranging from practical to purely decorative, there’s a lovely mix here. Think baskets, plant hangers, cushions, wall hangings, rugs, placemats, and even storage solutions—all worked in simple stitches that let texture and form do the talking.
Many projects are quick to make and require only basic techniques, making them perfect for beginners or anyone wanting a soothing, no-fuss project. But the end results are always polished and stylish—projects that look like they’ve come from a high-end homeware shop.
Ease of Use
Lucy’s patterns are written in US terminology with an open out flap at the beginning showing the conversions for UK terminology.
There’s guidance on choosing yarns, a useful chart showing yarn weights and another showing crochet hook size conversions. There is a wonderful section where she describes other items you can add to your makes so that they stand out – such as beads, metal rings and embroidery hoops.
She includes a helpful stitch guide at the start of the book, starting with the anatomy of a stitch – with clear images highlighting all the terms used. All the stitch patterns used in the projects are shown with step by step images and written text, as well as techniques such as how to work surface crochet, tapestry crochet and even macrame!

My Favourite...
This is quite a departure for me. I am not usually drawn to wall hangings but this one really caught my eye. It incorporates tapestry crochet mixed with weaving.
This is the perfect way to try weaving if you don’t have a loom, by using crochet as a base. The finished effect is modern, bold, and completely unique.

My Observations
This book is a joy to work from, whether you’re making gifts or decorating your own home. It’s approachable, stylish, and full of projects you’ll actually want to use and display.
Here’s what stood out to me:
Most projects use sturdy, neutral-toned yarns that give a clean, modern look.
Many items are practical as well as decorative—great for reducing clutter and showing off your crochet.
The photography and layout make it a pleasure to flip through for inspiration.
Ideal for confident beginners, with enough variety to keep more experienced crocheters engaged.
Summary
Creative Modern Crochet for the Home is a gorgeous and practical collection that combines the joy of making with the satisfaction of styling your own space. Whether you’re looking to refresh a room, make a thoughtful gift, or simply enjoy some mindful making, this book offers beautifully designed projects with a contemporary twist. A must-have for home-loving crocheters who appreciate clean lines, soft texture, and calming colours.
