If you love Moomins and have a passion for knitting, Knitted Moomin Socks, edited by Linda Permanto, is an absolute treat. This beautifully curated collection of sock patterns brings Tove Jansson’s beloved Moomin characters to life in a way that is both charming and wearable.
Designs & Patterns
The book offers a delightful mix of designs, from classic Nordic motifs to intricate depictions of Moomintroll, Snufkin, and Little My. The patterns have clear instructions and gorgeous photography that make each project feel like an invitation to cosy up with your needles. The patterns include different types of toes and heels; some are worked top down and some toe up so you can choose your favourite techniques.
Clear Charts for Easy Knitting
The clarity of the well-organized and easy-to-follow charts is a huge plus, especially for those working with intricate colorwork. Even knitters who typically shy away from charted patterns will find them approachable and well-structured.
They each show which stitches should be on which needles if using double pointed needles, which is so helpful. If you prefer magic loop or two circulars you can simply combine two of the double point needle sets of stitches together.
Fit & Sizing
The socks are all written to cater for one size. While advice is given on how to adjust sizes, such as changing the needle size, adding or reducing pattern repeats, this may present a challenge to beginner sock knitters, especially where repeating stranded colourwork is used. I would therefore recommend this book only to knitters who have some experience in getting socks to fit properly as well as stranded colourwork.
Moomin Magic in Every Stitch
What makes this book truly special is how it captures the warmth and whimsy of the Moomin world. Knitting a pair of these socks feels like stepping into Moominvalley—calming, creative, and full of nostalgia. The designs reflect the cosy, heartwarming essence of Jansson’s stories, making each project feel extra special.
Presentation & Usability
Beyond the patterns, the book itself is a work of art. The high-quality presentation, beautiful layout, and stunning photography make it a joy to flip through, even when you’re not knitting. The instructions are clear, and the variety of patterns ensures knitters of all levels can find something to enjoy.
My Favourite Pattern
I had one that jumped out at me this time. The pattern looks much more intricate to work than it actually is. A mosaic pattern is worked over the feet while the stranded technique is used on the legs. The colours used for this 'Flowers for the Snorkmaiden' design are gorgeous.

Things to Consider
The yarns used in the book are from the Moomin x Novita range. The Novita company does not ship directly to the UK or the US. On their website they mention that Loveknitting.com is a stockist but I can only find Novita patterns on there, not the yarn. From my research of the book I can see that the tension used in stocking stitch over a 3mm (UK 11, US 2/3) is 24sts to 10cm (4in) for most patterns using a DK yarn. The confident among you would be able to substitute yarn and potentially adjust the pattern if required
As mentioned above the patterns are written for one size, so unless you have experience with adjusting stitch counts to fit your size foot this book may be a little advanced for you, especially where charts are used.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a book that blends storytelling, craftsmanship, and Scandinavian charm, Knitted Moomin Socks is a must-have. The combination of delightful designs, clear charts, and high-quality presentation makes it perfect for gifting or indulging in a bit of handmade magic yourself.
