There are some books you admire from a distance — and then there are the rare ones you get to know from the inside out. The Knitted Fabric, published by Search Press, firmly falls into the second category for me.
I was lucky enough to work as the tech editor for this new Search Press edition, which means I’ve had the privilege of seeing every project, every chart, every diagram — and every thoughtful design decision — at a level most readers never do. And I can honestly say: the depth of detail in this book is exceptional.
The whole book is organised into three collections. Each collection has various makes in it varying from wraps, shawls, cushions, blankets, hats, gloves and sweaters.
A masterclass in clarity and construction
From a technical point of view, this is a beautifully put-together book. The written instructions are clear, precise and carefully structured, guiding you through each project without ever feeling overwhelming.
The charts are meticulously prepared, and the layout diagrams add an extra layer of understanding that will be hugely appreciated by knitters who like to see how something comes together, not just read about it.
This is one of those books where you can tell that nothing has been rushed. Every element has been thought through — not only from a design perspective, but from the point of view of the knitter actually working through the projects.

Insight into a designer’s creative process
One of my absolute favourite aspects of The Knitted Fabric is the inclusion of Dee Hardwicke’s original sketches. These are far more than decorative extras — they offer a genuine window into her design process.
Seeing how an idea evolves from an initial sketch into a finished knitted piece is fascinating, especially for knitters who are curious about how designers think.
It’s rare to see this part of the creative journey shared so openly, and it adds a real sense of connection between designer and maker.
More than patterns — a design-led knitting book
This isn’t just a collection of patterns; it’s a book about knitted fabric as an artistic medium. The projects are rich in colourwork and texture, and the overall feel is calm, thoughtful and deeply inspiring.
It’s the kind of book you’ll happily leave on your coffee table — but also one you’ll return to again and again when you want to knit something truly special.

Final thoughts
Working on this book as a tech editor gave me a unique appreciation for just how much care and expertise has gone into it. If you enjoy beautifully presented colourwork, value clear instructions and strong technical foundations, and love gaining insight into a designer’s creative thinking, The Knitted Fabric is a book you’ll treasure.
This is one to savour — slowly, thoughtfully, and with a good cup of tea nearby. ☕🧶

My Favourite...
My favourite patterns are the cushions - particularly this one from the Garden City Collection.
Gorgeous! 😮
